Tinnitus is the perception of sound in the ears or head that is not caused by an external sound source.
Ringing and buzzing sounds may be heard in one or both ears or appear to be generally in the head region.
Usually, it occurs when the inner ear is damaged or impaired in some way. Some potential causes include:
- Exposure to loud noises or Ear injury
- Ear infections
- Head or Neck injuries
- A build-up of ear wax
- Nerve Problems
These are just a few of the most common causes, but tinnitus can also be a side-effect of medication or a result of other health concerns, such as high blood pressure.
It is also commonly associated with age-related hearing loss, although it can affect anyone at any age.
One cause of tinnitus that may be treated with chiropractic is trauma to the head or neck.
These types of injuries can interrupt the normal function of the muscles, blood vessels, and nerves leading to your ears. If you have a vertebral subluxation in your cervical spine, or misalignment in your spinal column, it could potentially be causing the ringing.
Tinnitus may also be caused by tension or spasms in the muscles of the ear: the tensor tympani and the stapedius. Spinal adjustments and alignments may help correct this tension, allowing the muscles and nerves connected to the spine to function normally.
Manipulations may also be able to alleviate the symptoms of TMJ, which is yet another cause of tinnitus.
In fact, here is a story of how chiropractic was “invented” and its about how DD Palmer “cured” someone for tinnitus.

Tinnitus symptoms
Tinnitus is often described as a ‘ringing in the ears’, but the most common description for noise-induced tinnitus is a high-pitched tone or noise.
Steps to manage your tinnitus
- Seek Help
- If chiropractic is not for you, we will recommend a full diagnostic hearing test with an audiologist or audiometrist to find the right solution for you.
- Reduce Exposure to Loud Noise
- Hearing Aids – Hearing aids may assist with tinnitus by helping to overcome any underlying hearing loss.
- Relaxation and Meditation – If you relax more, you stress less. The intention of relaxation and meditation is to teach yourself to take the focus away from the symptoms of tinnitus, turning your attention to what you enjoy.
- Diet – Ease up on caffeine and alcohol as they can temporarily increase tinnitus for some people.
- Exercise
- Regular exercise helps the body achieve a higher level of well-being and, in most cases, helps people to ignore and better cope with their tinnitus.
- Quit Smoking – Smoking narrows the blood vessels that supply vital oxygen to your ears and the sensory cells.
