The Chiropractic Approach to Sciatica – Let’s treat the cause of the problem!.
Sciatic pain is usually felt in the legs. It can affect, one leg, both legs or even present itself as lower back pain. The pain varies from mild to severe as well as intermittent to constant. Even though the pain is felt in the legs it is important to understand that the root of sciatic pain usually lies in the spine. In most cases sciatic pain is caused by the compression of the sciatic nerve root as it exits the spinal cord in the lower back.
Other causes of sciatic nerve compression include herniated spinal discs and piriformis syndrome (the inflammation of the piriformis muscle in the buttocks).
Good news is that research shows that chiropractic care is very effective at alleviating the common causes of sciatic pain. One such research study by Ann Swiss (Chiro Assoc 1989; 9:133) compared chiropractic care for the treatment of sciatica to bed rest, electrical muscle stimulation, anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) as well as a muscle relaxant. Patients that were received chiropractic treatment experienced significant reduction in the length of care, significantly faster improvement and less disability at work in comparison to all other treatment groups.
In addition research shows that chiropractic are highly successful for sciatic pain due to vertebral & sacroiliac subluxations. Patients treated with chiropractic adjustments average 43 days to “attain maximum improvement” after an average of 19 chiropractic visits (J Manipulative Physiol There 1984; 7:1).
